Santa's last stops before heading back North!

Santa made a stop at the Lake Park Post Office on Christmas Eve to check for last minute letters and also to thank the staff there for hard work and great service. He knows how hard they work to get your letters and packages delivered. They are Santa's best helpers!!

Santa also heard that McDonald's staff is always friendly and courteous-even early in the mornings!
Someone even told him they have the best "Senior Coffee" in town.

Santa left early Monday morning to get back to the North Pole. He loves Lake Park and said he would surely be back next year. I heard him say that as much as he likes little kids; he kind of favors the older crowd!! So you folks out there start right now and try to be good this whole year.

We have another Life After Fifty dance coming up the end of February so rest up and stay tuned for details!

Chris & Dan's "One Armed Bandit"

Dan and I have a daughter and granddaughter in Las Vegas, so a very good excuse to visit there often!! Actually, neither one of us are into gambling but we do enjoy walking through the casinos - there is so much to see and always some type entertainment in the lobbys. And watching the gamblers is fun too. Just "people watching" in a casino is entertaining.

Dan does love old cars, music and fun things from the 40's, 50's & 60's.
We passed a store selling old slot machines on a recent visit. Finding one that was a late 40's model and retired from The Flamingo was quite interesting. It is a nickel slot, lighted and works!! Well, first he had to buy a gaming license in order to purchase it, then they had to research whether it could be shipped to Georgia, as all states do not allow them. It turned out that GA does if it is a 1950 or older model!! So now it is happily retired to our "HotRod House"!!
We know now why it was retired - it pays off WAY to often!!!!

I got great answers to the trivia about the slot machines. They are called "One Armed Bandits" because they have the one arm on the side and they take your money! Slot machines were invented by Charles Fry in San Francisco, CA. The 1st one was named the "Liberty Bell".
The "American Gangster", Bugsy Siegel, was associated with the early success of gambling in Las Vegas and brought the slot machines there mainly to entertain the women who accompanied the men poker players!! I read that now slot machines constitute 70% of the average casino income.

I will have to confess to my first casino experience. I had never even been in a casino until right after Dan and I met six years ago! He took me to Niagra Falls and right beside our hotel was a huge casino. Of course I wanted to see what it was like. He gave me $100.00 and told me I could play whatever I liked with it. I know nothing about cards or how to gamble but those fancy slot machines caught my attention - you could play a dime, quarter or dollar at a time and all you had to do was pull that lever. I figured this way, at least I could play longer before my money was gone and it didn't require any gambling skill. Well, after a while I got brave and would double the amount and before I knew what was happening, bells started ringing and dinging and coins falling out of that machine!!!! I won $380.00 and still had most of the $100 left. I was so excited - I told Dan I wanted to take my money right then and leave. I think he was surprised and thought I would end up losing it all, but winning $380.00 was exciting to me and I didn't want to lose it!!!

I didn't get hooked. I do enjoy the lights, watching the other people and the festive atmophere in the casino though!

OK, so much for slot machine trivia!!

Independence Day Celebration in Lake Park

Vernon and Marion Stephenson enjoyed being a part of the Independence Day Parade held
on Saturday, July 2nd.  We had a great time with a festival of events for all ages - from
two bounce houses, live entertainment, hotdog eating contest, vendors with crafts, foods and
more popcorn, boiled peanuts and ice cream than we could all eat!!

The parade made its way along Railroad Avenue next to Tom's Pond about 5:00 PM.
We were delighted that two of our Life After Fifty participants were a part of the festivities.
Marion & Vernon were looking quite patriotic in their red, white & blue with flags waving from their
golf cart.  Thanks for your participation!!

The day ended with the traditional fireworks over Tom's Pond.  Thanks to the City of Lake Park
and the Lake Park Chamber of Commerce for a great Independence Day Celebration.

I am working on the Sock Hop pictures - should have them on here in a day or so!
Stay tuned!!

Karaoke Night at the Lakes

Grassy Pond came alive when the Life After Fifty group arrived!
About 60 karaoke fans were present to see what would happen
when the LAF group tried singing in lieu of dancing!  Well, you
should have been there - we had some great voices in the crowd.
Our host, Richard Kuter, couldn't have been more entertaining with
his repitoire of songs and he even had ELVIS make an appearance!!!

Elvis swooned the crowd, even had Mrs. Moxley fanning for fresh air!
Our own Minnie James, LAF committee member and Director of
Baptist Village in Lake Park, was a hit with several songs including
"Satin Sheets".

We knew Richard Struempler could dance - he and his wife have been
to most all of the LAF dances.  Now we know, he can sing.  He was a
hit as he led the whole crowd(those of us to shy to take the mic) in
"King of the Road".  Richard was quite comfortable with the microphone.

We had several others who did a great job and had us all clapping and
tapping our feet.  Tim Wright and Alfred Gibson were hams with the
mic.  Ms. Maxine Rowe, Alfred's dancing partner, was as lovely as
ever in her sparkly red outfit.  Alfred and Maxine come to join us all
the way from Sylvester and Nashville!!

We were glad to have Buddy and his wife Dottie join us again.  Buddy
loves singing the "fifties" songs and we all loved that.

We plan to make Karaoke a part of our LAF activities - we welcome
your thoughts/ideas on how to make it as much fun as possible.  Yea,
we know - having a dance floor will make it better.  We will, next time.
Mr. & Mrs. Moxley had a really hard time staying in their seats, their feet
wanted to dance!!!

Check out the pictures below.

LAF Committee Members and Elvis

Mrs. Sue Moxley almost fainting as Elvis sings to her!

Minnie James, Director of Baptist Village in Lake Park

Alfred Gibson from Fitzgerald, GA singing to Ms Maxine

Minnie and Anita Armstrong, our newest LAF member singing "Unchained Melody"

Richard Struempler and his wife at Barn Dance

Richard and his wife don't miss a dance!!

Buddy knows we love the songs from the "fifties".

More pictures to come.  Check back soon.

Next dance April 30th.  More info on that very soon.
